Response by Durban Doodepoort Deep, limited to a statement by the National Union of Mineworkers, titled “NUM prepares for battle with the gold miner DRD”, dated today 9.09.03

The 60-day review process in respect of Durban Roodepoort Deep, Limited’s North West Operations is just two-thirds of the way through. 253/03-jmd
For Immediate Release

The 60-day review process in respect of Durban Roodepoort Deep, Limited’s North West Operations is just two-thirds of the way through. The main objective of this process, which involves a broad range of stakeholders including the National Union of Mineworkers, is to identify a sustainable way forward for the North West Operations; currently, they are loss-making and must be returned to profitability. Management has published its proposals and these are a matter of public record. The essential point to understand is that these are proposals and remain open to discussion by all participating stakeholders for the remainder of the review period. Management today (09.09.03) received the NUM’s proposals and has committed itself to a thorough evaluation of these and a considered response. Further, any of the participating stakeholders are free to table proposals and management would welcome these. It would be unfortunate, indeed unconstructive and potentially destructive, for any of the participants at this stage to assume an intransigent or polarizing position.
