Durban Roodepoort Deep, Limited's North West Operations achieved one million fatality free shifts on Saturday 2 December 2000.
Manager, Neil Herrick, congratulated the people of both the Harties and Buffels sections on this "magnificent achievement" and paid tribute to the willingness and dedication of each and every employee, every union and association leader and every manager, whose combined efforts have made the passing of this prestigious milestone possible.
"Safety is a way of life for us. Today - and again later in the month - we will celebrate this achievement. But, this celebration is not just a once-off event. What we will be celebrating is life and health and the way in which our way of working has added to the lives of the people around us - and not taken away from them.
The million fatality-free shifts were obtained by 11700 people over a period starting on 11 August 2000. The last time this achievement was obtained at this mine was in August 1998. Two months ago the Blyvoor Operation achieved Two million fatality free shifts.
