OUR COMMITMENT TO MINERALS COUNCIL SOUTH AFRICA’S KHUMBUL’EKHAYA SAFETY AND HEALTH INITIATIVE

Johannesburg, 3 October 2019. I am pleased to commit both DRDGOLD and myself to Minerals Council South Africa’s Khumbul’ekhaya health and safety initiative launched this week.

The aim of the initiative is to drive and sustain the mining industry’s pursuit of Zero Harm, with a particular emphasis on the elimination of fatalities.

Khumbul’ekhaya, an Nguni word for “remember home”, recognises the devastating impact that work-related deaths in our industry have on families at home.

It has four critical drivers:

  • our industry’s continued commitment to Zero Harm
  • a two-year focus on the elimination of fatalities as a result of both safety and health incidents
  • adoption of an holistic approach, recognising that fatalities are usually the result of a complex set of circumstances
  • learning from incidents, from each other and from other industries.

In the months to come, I look forward to reporting to all of our stakeholders on DRDGOLD’s work towards and progress in respect of these.

For more information, visit the Khumbul’ekhaya website.
