The social aspect of sustainability has to do with the ways in which the company affects the social systems in which it operates. Following GRI guidelines, DRDGOLD has identified the key indicators of its performance in this area with respect to safety, health, HIV & AIDS, labour practices and human rights, and local economic development and corporate social responsibility.
Please note that the safety and health function at Ergo is managed by Crown, thus all management and performance details as well as statistics for Crown include those recorded at Ergo.
The Board of Directors and, in particular, its Transformation and Sustainable Development Committee oversee the safety and health performance of the group.
DRDGOLD’s Health and Safety Policy states that the company is committed to carrying out its activities in such a way that ensures that the health and safety of employees is continually given ‘foremost consideration’. It states that in no circumstances will any current or future activities be allowed to compromise the health and safety of employees and/or their families.
Occupational health and safety is integrated into the overall management structure and into business performance. DRDGOLD is committed to instilling in every single employee a culture that upholds the effective management of occupational health and safety as a prime objective of the company. To this end, awareness campaigns and training programmes are integral to the safety and health function across the group.
DRDGOLD complies with all relevant legal requirements regarding safety and occupational health and is a signatory to the 10-year health and safety targets set at the 2003 summit of the Mine Health and Safety Council (MHSC). MHSC is a tripartite body comprising members drawn from government, employers in the mining industry and employees. Under the chairmanship of the Chief Inspector of Mines, the council advises the Minister of Mineral Resources on health and safety at operational level as well as on research programmes. It also reviews regulations.
